How to replace a Dodge Jeep Chrysler Oil Pump?
1.Tools and Materials Needed For Repair
- A complete set of hand tools
- A gasket scraper
- An oil drip pan
- A car jack and jack stands
- A new oil filter and new oil
- The correct oil pump for your particular vehicle
- A new gasket
When you remove and replace an engine oil pump preparation is important. Purchase the correct oil pump for your model of car and the right oil for it as well. Also, buy a new oil pan gasket that is not cheaply made. When you have everything you need you should jack the car up to a level where jack stands can safely be used.
2.Accessing the Engine Oil Pump
Go under the vehicle and locate the oil pan. Examine how it is connected to the vehicle and gather the correct tools that you need to remove it. Place the oil drip pan under the oil pan and remove the drain plug. The engine oil will begin to pour out of the vehicle and into the drain pan. After several minutes you can replace the drain cap. Remove all of the bolts connecting the oil pan to the frame. Once all of the bolts are removed the oil pan should easily be removed. With the oil pan removed look behind the engine. You will notice the engine oil pump near the back. It is recognizable due to the filter and tubes coming off it.
3.Remove the Engine Oil Pump
The engine oil pump will be easily recognizable once the oil pan is removed. This engine oil pump is often held in place with one bolt. Determine the right size tool to use and remove the bolt. With the bolt removed the engine oil pump will now come off much easier.
4.Replace the Engine Oil Pump
Place the new engine oil pump where their old pump was. It is important that the alignment pin is left untouched in its hole. Use a torque wrench to tighten the bolt to 35 or 40 foot-pounds.
5.Finishing the Process
Remove the old oil gasket and scrape away the grime and muck. Apply sealant to the gasket and then place it on the oil pan. Wait roughly 30 minutes before continuing. Place the oil pan back in place and make sure all of the bolts are tightened. Whenever you replace an oil pump or change the oil you should always replace the oil filter. Remove the old oil filter and discard it, then place the new oil filter in its place. Replace any bolts or screws that remain and make sure they are tight. Open the hood of the vehicle and pour the new oil into the oil pan. Turn the car on and allow it to idle so the new oil can circulate through the system.
