Fit In Five Steps
How to replace a BMW 3 5 7 Series A/C Compressor with Clutch?
1. Tools Needed for Repair
- 15mm open-end wrench
- Ratchet
- Pry bar
- Socket set
- Lubricant
- Pliers
- New A/c compressor clutch coil
2.Secure Vehicle
Make sure that your car is parked on a flat surface, and the parking brake is engaged. Open the hood, and locate the serpentine belt tensioner. Use the wrench to pull it towards you, so you can control the tensioner in a released position. Unbolt the serpentine belt tensioner with a 3x13mm socket.
3.Locate A/c Compressor Clutch
Locate the alternator mount bolts, and remove it using a 2x13mm socket. Take off the plastic cap that protects the alternator and the battery wire to see the 1x13mm nut under it. Unscrew the nut. Remove the alternator from the engine using the pry bar.
4. Remove Old A/C Compressor Clutch
Unscrew the two long bolts that hold the a/c compressor on top and the other pair of long bolts below. Use a 16mm deep socket with a 3/8 drive so you could reach it. Remove the a/c compressor from its mount with the pry bar. Be very careful when you lift the compressor up. The parts are very sensitive and fragile. Watch out for the plastic coolant hose pipe near the engine block. Spray lubricant on the center bolt located under the compressor, and remove it. Lift the clutch up to see the other parts below it. Detach the clutch mechanism and the snap-ring. Lift the pulley out, so you can already see the clutch coil. Use a pair of pliers to remove the clutch coil. Beware when you pull the coil out because it may spring directly towards you. Do this slowly but with the right amount of pressure.
5.Replace New A/C Compressor Clutch & Check for a Test drive
Take the new a/c compressor clutch coil, and clip it to the guide pin located on the mount. Make sure that the coil is placed slowly so it will not spring out. Reinstall the snap ring and clutch mechanism back in place. Place the other parts you’ve detached back in their previous positions. Switch on the engine, and observe the a/c compressor coil if it’s working properly.
