How to replace a Jeep Comanche Cherokee Grand Cherokee Neutral Safety Switch?

1.verifying the Neutral Safety Switch Condition & Preparing to Work

Place the column shifter or floor shifter in park. Set the parking brake.

Materials Needed
  • Floor Jack
  • Jack stands
  • Wheel Chocks

Park your vehicle on a flat, hard surface. Place wheel chocks around the rear tires that will be remaining on the ground. Raise the vehicle. Place the jack stands.

2.Removing the column & electronic floor shifter neutral safety switch

Materials Needed
  • Allen wrench set
  • Boxed end wrenches
  • Breaker bar
  • Fastener remover (only for vehicles with engine guard)
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Nine-volt battery saver
  • Ratchet with metric and standard sockets
  • Small punch
  • Small pry bar
  • Torques bit set
  • Torque wrench

Install a nine-volt battery saver into your cigarette lighter. Open the hood and disconnect the battery. Get your creeper and tools. Remove the shifter linkage attached to the shifter on the transmission. Remove the mounting bolts to the neutral safety switch. Unplug the harness to the neutral safety switch. Remove the nut from the shifter shaft on the transmission. Remove the switch.

Install a nine-volt battery saver into your cigarette lighter. Open the hood and disconnect the battery. Bring your tools with you in the passenger side of the vehicle. Remove the mounting bolts on the floorboard. Pick up the floor shifter assembly and detach the harness. Remove the neutral safety switch from the shifter housing.

3.Installing the column & electronic floor shifter neutral safety switch

Materials Needed
  • Allen wrench set
  • Anti-Seize
  • Boxed end wrenches
  • Breaker bar
  • Fastener remover (only for vehicles with engine guard)
  • Needle nose pliers
  • Nine-volt battery saver
  • Ratchet with metric and standard sockets
  • Small punch
  • Small pry bar
  • Torques bit set
  • Torque wrench

Check that transmission is in the park. Install the new neutral safety switch. Screw in the mounting bolts by hand. Plug in the harness to the neutral safety switch. Install the shifter linkage bracket. Install the linkage onto the linkage bracket. Hook up the negative battery cable to the negative terminal.

Install the new neutral safety switch into the shifter housing. Place the floor shifter onto the floorboard. Install the mounting bolts on the floorboard. Install the carpet around the shifter housing. Hook up the negative battery cable to the negative terminal.

4.Lowering the vehicle

Raise the vehicle. Remove the jack stands. Lower the vehicle to where all four wheels are on the ground. Remove the wheel chocks from the rear wheels.

5.Testing the new neutral safety switch

Make sure that the shifter is in the park position. Turn the ignition off making the engine shut off.
